Albanian Government adopts 10% flat rate tax. Being generous or just a cunning plan?

At the start of this year Albania followed a number of its post communist Eastern European neighbours and adopted a flat tax rate of 10%.

In a nutshell this basically means that companies and individuals will pay a flat 10% of their earnings to the tax authorities irrespective of how much they actually earn. Compare this to the vast majority of other countries in the world who have ‘Progressive tax’ regimes whereby the burden of tax increases as earnings increase. Read more →

Does growth in airport traffic signal increased interest in Albania?

TIA the company that runs Tirana International airport has recently announced that 2007 was a record year for the airport as the volume of passengers, cargo and aircraft traffic had all increased on previous years:

  • During 2007 some 1.1 million passengers had passed through the airport representing an increase of 22% compared with 2006 and which also set a new record for air passenger transport in Albania.
  • Close to 3,500 tonnes of cargo was handled which represents a 65% increase on 2006.
  • The overall number of aircraft traffic movements (ATMs) had also increased by 15% on 2006. Read more →

Oh Crap, my Passport expires in 76 days..!

Earlier this week as I started getting myself organised for a trip to Albania I fished my passport out from the place that I keep it safely stored. At the point I had it in my hand wondering if I really looked like that 10 years ago I suddenly remembered that it was due to run out mid April this year.

“So what’s the problem with that?” you might ask, “Just send it off in the post and get it renewed, it only takes a few weeks”.
